The Sunflower Lanyard — Hidden Disabilities Scheme
A discreet way to signal a hidden disability and request a little more time, support, or understanding.
1. What is the Sunflower Lanyard?
The Sunflower Lanyard is a discreet way of indicating to staff that you or your child have a hidden disability and may need additional support, understanding, or time. Wearing the lanyard is entirely voluntary and communicates no specific information beyond 'I have a hidden disability.'
2. Where it is recognised
The scheme is recognised by hundreds of organisations across the UK, including all major airports (Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh), major supermarkets (Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, M&S), many NHS trusts, theme parks, and public transport providers. Full current list: hdsunflower.com.
3. How to get one
Lanyards are available free from many participating organisations — ask at customer service desks at major supermarkets and airports. They can also be ordered online from hdsunflower.com.
4. Using it with children
The lanyard can be worn by the child, a parent, or both. Many families find it useful at airports (security, boarding), large shops during busy periods, and any situation where staff understanding might reduce stress.
